Should You Complete A Proper Heavy Metal Detox

How do you complete or how do you do a proper heavy metal detoxification? If you haven’t got Candida Crusher this… I think, I’m pretty sure, there’s a good few pages on detoxing, but particularly heavy metal detoxification in there. I talk a bit about it. So it’s something I did a lot of many years ago when I worked with a medical doctor friend of mine. We conducted many different detoxification tests and detoxification programs on a wide variety of patients over about a five year period. This would have been… I’m just trying to remember now. It would have been around 2000… From around about 2001 to about 2006 when I did a particularly and incredible amount of heavy metal cleansing with patients. I was very interested in this area. I’ve drifted out of it and focused more on digestive areas.

And then you may say, “Well, this guy is a bit of a loser. First he did this. Then he did that.” I couldn’t see the relevance in heavy metal cleansing at the extent we were doing after several years, because I really couldn’t see the return for the patients that they were expecting for the money that I was spending. Some people spend thousands of dollars on cleansers and at the end they just feel just as crappy as they did at the beginning. I didn’t notice it all the time, but I noticed it quite regularly with people. Don’t become a pathological detoxifier. Okay. We’ll say it again. Don’t be a pathological detoxifier. What do I mean by that? Don’t become a person who’s obsessed with detoxing who’ll do one cleanse after another cleanse after another cleanse. Some people I’ve talked to have been cleansing for 10 to 20 years. They go through all these cycles.

And then I say, “How do you feel?” “I feel like crap.” “Hang on a minute. You spent 10 years detoxing. You should feel like the Lord. You should feel like on cloud nine. You should be like… You should be amazing.” “I feel crap. I need another cleanse.” Maybe they need to go to some sort of wacko hippy camp or something. I don’t know. Really, the only people that end up… But I’ve seen ’em. That’s what I’m saying. Don’t become one of these freak shows and they are out there. There’s freaky people that think that life’s all about one cleanser after another. Some people go on endless detoxification regimes. Constant coffee enemas. One patient we had was doing coffee enemas per day for over 10 years. Every single day a coffee enema. When we do the stool test result, guess what we found? Zero beneficial bacteria. And then the guy kept telling me how much he was having die-off. And I said, “Mate, you are going to bloody die-off yourself if you keep worrying about this die-off thing. It’s no laughing matter.”

Here’s what you do. If you’re worried about heavy metals in your body, I would ask you this question if you came to my clinic, what was your occupation up to now? What have you done? What’s your exposure? Have you been scraping lead paint off buildings, burning it off and smelling it in? Were you a jeweler or involved in lots of sodering all the time? Or were you a guy like me who likes doing led lighting, cutting glass and sodering that together and then sniffing all those led fumes up if you’re sodering? Have you worked in printing shops? Are you involved in the agricultural industry distributing fertilizer? In New Zealand we have topdressing planes, planes that fly and they dump fertilizer on fields, NPK fertilizer. And unfortunately, got a lot of cadmium in the fertilizer so these guys often have high cadmium levels. The point I’m making here is once you’ve seen thousands of patients, you start to work out what profession have about the highest toxicity levels. Some of the worst? Road workers. Those poor guys that have to manipulate the asphalt and they’re breathing all that crap in.

So when a person comes to you with an occupation that’s suspect, the first thing you can do is a hair test. There’s two ways you can do a hair test. You can do this stuff. Or you can do that stuff. The pubic hair concentrates toxins better than head hair. People don’t usually get their pubic hair cut every six to eight weeks. Not usually. Well, some people have got none. Well, for different reasons. But yeah. The head hair is good. But the pubic hair must be clearly marked on the envelope. This is pubic hair. And you’ll find, oftentimes, that you may even pick some toxins out of the pubic hair that you didn’t pick up in here. I lost several patients when I requested pubic hair samples, because they thought I was a bit of a wacko. They say. Yeah. There’s a lot of strange people out there. But yeah.

Hair samples need to be taken at the occipital. So at the back of the head and usually, from ear to ear, four or five small samples are taken. Just under. Course, if their hair is dyed, permed, bleached, or colored. It’s not going to work too well. Check the shampoo that you’re using. So my recommendation is to work with only one lab with heavy metal. And it’s Doctor’s Data in Chicago, Illinois. Is Illinois a state? Or is Chicago the state in Illinois though? I don’t know. You’re laughing if you’re an American. But I remember asking people in Los Angeles where New Zealand was. “Isn’t that a part of the UK in England somewhere? New Zealand, that’s in England or in Ireland.” One guy said to me. So yeah, it’s funny, eh?

Anyway, we were talking heavy metal weren’t we? So get the hair test done. Get it back. You’re going to have all the metals at the top and you’re going to have the minerals on the bottom. So you’re going to request a mineral, a heavy metal test, hair test, that involves minerals and metals. So you look at the top and you’re looking for a spike. You’re looking for something that comes right out. Look for mercury. Look at cadmium. Look at arsenic. If an ain’t in their hair, it ain’t likely to be a big problem in the body. So I’ve seen people, many, many people with small amounts of metals and they immediately start wanting to have a massive, full on detoxification. Experienced practitioners who know heavy metal detox fall into two camps. Some doctors I know every single problem is a heavy metal toxicity that requires four or five grands worth of detoxification. So they just push people through that. The cookie cutter protocol.

Others will only detox when they see that the patient really needs detoxification and is actually physically affected by toxins. If I walked out there now in Times Square and I tested a thousand people, I would find 895 or 900 had heavy metal in their body. Observable heavy metal. And out of that 800, 900, I would probably find about 100 with seriously high levels. And I’d find also a large amount with low to normal levels. So not one person walking on this globe today, probably unless you’re in Antarctica or somewhere deep in the Mato Grosso in Amazon, will have heavy metal in their body. You’ve got it watching this. Now you will have selenides like in cadmiums. You’ve got likely heavy metal in your body right now. It could be aluminum. It could be cadmium. It could be arsenic. Everyone’s got it. We’re all breathing in the same air.

But at what level does it become a problem? That’s what I’m saying. There’s 60,000 chemicals plus registered on the CIS the CAS database. How far do you want to go? Why don’t we just test every single chemical in your body and then give you a printout of the 936 chemicals that are found in your body? And let’s just spend 70 grand trying to take 10 of those out. Do you really think it’s going to make your health that much better? While you’re walking around talking on these all day to your girlfriend and frying your brain and drinking water with probably fluoride or in it or what. Think carefully about the heavy metal detox angle. It is a problem and some people absolutely need detoxification. But in many cases the costs and the burden far exceed the return.

So we’re going back to the hair test. So you want your hair test in front of you and you go, “Wow, mercury. Look at the spike on that. It’s really high.” What I want you to do is check which element comes back at its highest and then do a good thorough search online for that element and the health effects that it can potentially produce. And then have a careful look and think about that with what you’ve got. Now many people will say, “I’ve got all of those.” Yeah, but hang on a minute. That could be something else too. It might not be the heavy metal. All right. But if you’re serious and you think, “I’m sick. Is this metal?”

You can go a step further. You can do what’s called a provocation test. So the provocation test will mean you take something orally or intravenously and that provokes the body to dump more metal. But it only works for four metals. The provocation will work for arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury. The four sulfide or the metals that are attracted to sulfur. The four sulfide metals will show up in a provocation. I don’t think you can provocate aluminum from the body or other metals like that. When we’re going into provocation testing, you’re upping the ante. You’re going a step further. I’ve been through all these procedures myself. I didn’t like provocation. I felt physically sick from it. And as one of my PhD buddies explained to me it’s because I was probably magnesium depleted when I went into the provocation test. So when you get down that route, I hope you take a big fat checkbook with you because it’s going to cost you a lot of money. And there’s no guarantee that, after all of this shebang, that you’re going to come out feeling like Alice in Wonderland. There’s no guarantee. So be careful.

But if you said to me, “Eric, I have been involved with metal. I have been involved in agriculture.” Or, “I’m sick since I’ve worked on that job.” And is a clear cut link between the toxins and your health. You’re a fool not to go down that route. But for most average moms and dads at home, they don’t need to spend five or 10 grand on full-on detoxification. I even find it a waste of time, to be quite honest, for people who can go to clinics, stop smoking, and then go on detox programs. I don’t find it very beneficial for those kinds of people either. Think carefully what you’re doing. On a list of symptoms that are very much in line with the toxins and the occupation, it’s probably not going to do that much for you because you can do other detoxifications that that heavy metal that will be probably just as beneficial, if not more.

Going on a good liver detox, for example, a kidney and liver detox. Again, you can read about that in Candida Crusher. It’s all in there. So listen to this again, this video, if you want to get the key points out of it. And let’s just summarize things and wrap things up. Detox of heavy metals is very important and for a small, very small amount of people, it’s critical, but there’s a very high likelihood that you’re not a critical case that requires a five or 10K detox. Think twice before going down the route of the hair testing, provocation testing and more and more and more. Think very carefully about doing multiple rounds. Seven, 10, 15 rounds. And then the doctor getting you back again and again and again. Think carefully. Because it is a lot of money. Someone’s making a lot of money. You’re spending a lot of money. Herpes: The Impact Of Food and Stress

One in three people have herpes. It is a very common condition.

Some people with herpes get very fixated on the lysine: arginine ratio in their diet.

If we look at lysine, we know it is found in high protein foods. We also know that eating a high lysine diet inhibits viral replication. Vitamin C also interferes with the replication of the herpes virus. You need to take two to three grams of vitamin C per day to make lysine more effective in an anti-herpes protocol.

Core arginine foods are nuts and chocolate. When you go vegan, it’s often a real challenge. You will to get your protein from non-meat sources which are nuts. Many vegans snack on chocolate and lots of carbs and these foods can really aggravate herpes. Still, you don’t need to get too overly concerned about the high lysine, low arginine diet when it comes to herpes unless it is seriously out of control. If the herpes is so severe that you can’t function normally, then I can understand getting fussy about your diet.

But the biggest aggravator of herpes is stress. Stress really aggravates herpes because it increases your cortisol level. Cortisol can result in immunosuppression which allows the herpes to spread like wildfire. In most cases I think that stress is far more important that arginine/lysine ratios when it comes to preventing herpes relapse.

What you don’t want to do is become obsessed and anxious about food. I find that many people are like that when they go hard core vegan. They become so focused on food that they forget everything else in life. In fact, being vegan becomes an enormous source of stress and anxiety. The truth is, some of the happiest people I know have the worst diets. Some of the sickest, unhappiest people I know have amazing diets.

It’s not always what you eat that’s going to create good inner health. It’s how you feel about your life, your lifestyle, and how you feel about yourself in general.

There is so much contradicting information on which veggies are high in lysine, and nuts and seeds and gelatin are high in arginine.

Every time I eat very healthy for my digestion, it triggers promodrome syndrome, nausea, burping, neck, lower back pain, nerve pain, feber, abdominal pain, which I always attributed to Candida or Sibo, but over the years I think it is the herpes virus going active.

I was following a high fiber, plant-based diet with a little meat, but it’s hard to get enough calories without nuts, seeds, or starch. I only weigh a 100 pounds and have a high metabolic rate. I’m not crazy about eating meat and dairy – high lysine. I digestively feel much better eating bananas, sweet potatoes, beans, lentils, rice, salads, but its hard to keep balance with the herpes, amino acid ratio in check.

I always feel like I am choosing between my herpes viral load, or eating the way I feel I should. And can a virus cause strong flu like systems and even burping if you are in arginine overload?

Cutting back on meat and dairy makes me feel so much better, more energized and alkaline but I wonder if Sibo or parasites cause the burps and nausea when I eat the natural sugars and starches.

Raising my stomach acid with apple cider vinegar and digestive enzymes doesn’t even touch the burping. Then it will go away randomly.

You’ve got all these problems. Why are you so fixed on herpes and these problems.

One in three people have herpes. It is very common. But I don’t get 30% of my videos being herpes related videos.

Most people tend to get on with their lives and stop being anal and focused on this particular thing. You don’t need to get too overly concerned about the high lysine, low arginine diet when it comes to herpes unless it is seriously out of control.

If the herpes is so severe that people can’t function normally, I tend to get extremely fussy about the diet, for particular reasons. But in most cases I assume your herpes is not to the point that you are contemplating suicide. It sounds like you have obsessions about food in general.

You need to be careful with this kind of dietary approach, because you are pigeon holing yourself, You’re pushing yourself into a corner that’s going to create significant eating problems for you.

With a high metabolism and only weighing 100 pounds, it sounds to me like you have a high degree of anxiety or stress. More than anything, this needs to be worked on.

One of the most important foods for your to eat would be the chill foods, the relaxing foods. What I’d like you to do is see someone about your lifestyle in general, because I think there is more here than meets the eye.

I think you are very food focused and obsessed. I also think you need to take a step back and look at the big picture, not just what you eat.

I find that many people are like this when they go hard core vegan. They become so focused on food that they forget everything else in life. Some of the sickest, unhappiest people I know have amazing diets.

10 Psychological Effects of Having Candida Yeast Overgrowth

1. Vaginitis

As a woman, have you ever had those thick, white discharges that resemble cottage cheese? Did the discharge bother you?

For some women, vaginal yeast infections (or vaginitis) are not a big deal and are no more inconvenient than thrush. However, many others are not so lucky especially those women who experience vaginal discharges that give off a really foul smell. These women often feel disgusted with the smell – this makes them feel awkward and embarrassed to be around others. As a result, many tend to isolate themselves from society because they are afraid others might smell the yeast as well.

2. Severe seasonal allergies and itching

Did you know that seasonal allergies have an extremely negative impact on the quality of life of a lot of people? Studies have shown that due to severe allergies and itching, 29 percent of individuals with allergies suffer from a decrease in work productivity – this is mainly because they are exhausted and cannot concentrate properly on their allocated tasks.

Moreover, 52 percent cannot even think about enjoying outdoor activities with their relatives and friends and, as such, restrict themselves to indoor ones such as board games and playing cards. Another 60 percent of allergy sufferers report feeling utterly miserable because they had to give up so many activities they used to enjoy with their peers and relatives. On top of that, research also indicates that there is a greater probability for seasonal allergy sufferers to experience mental fatigue, irritability and sorrow compared to those who don’t.

3. Body odor

“Ugh, what is that awful smell?”

I am sure this has crossed your mind at least once in your life when you were on the bus or waiting to pay for your groceries. Well, many people suffering from Candida yeast overgrowth have acknowledged that the smell coming from their body is sometimes so strong that they feel disgusted with their own selves and prefer to avoid socializing with others.

Since body odors have been shown to provoke nervousness, apprehension and other adverse psychological reactions, they can cause individuals to feel embarrassed and uncomfortable around others. As such, many feel hopelessly doomed and excluded.

4. Bloating and constipation

A swollen, tight and perhaps even painful abdomen – does this sound familiar? For those with Candida yeast overgrowth, bloating is unfortunately often a part of their daily life. Although some may joke that they get so bloated that they ‘can hold a cup of tea on their belly’ or they ‘look like they’re six months pregnant’, bloating can have a significantly adverse effect on the emotional well-being of those affected.

For instance, some individuals report that bloating can even ruin their holidays because they need to lie down (and miss out on the fun) due to the lethargy, pain and discomfort they experience. Others explained that bloating can lead to a loss of sexual drive because they ‘feel so fat and unattractive’. Moreover, others often claim that bloating has reduced their self-esteem because they cannot wear many clothes they like or because they need to shop for bigger sizes.

5. Diarrhea

Recurrent diarrhea is another digestive symptom of Candida Yeast overgrowth. Individuals who suffer from chronic diarrhea explain that they often become obsessed with questions such as ‘Will I make it?’, ‘Where is the nearest toilet?’ or ‘Will I be able to reach the toilet before it is too late?’ As such, many begin to dread activities they would usually enjoy (such as going to the beach or watching a movie with friends). Moreover, because they often have to excuse themselves from classes or work, these individuals may live with a fear of losing their job or failing classes.

6. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).

Did you know that chronic fatigue syndrome is a common symptom of Candida yeast overgrowth? Frequent among both adults and teenagers, chronic fatigue syndrome is a complex disorder characterized by extreme tiredness that does not appear to be caused by any underlying medical complication. Although the fatigue may get worse with physical or mental activity, it does not improve when one rests. As such, this debilitating chronic illness has an impact on both the physical and emotional wellbeing of an individual.

The emotional impact of a diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome is different for each person,” says Peter Rowe, MD, director of the Chronic Fatigue Clinic at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore, “but it relates to the loss of the ability to do the things you were good at before.” Dr Rowe also explains that “people with chronic fatigue symptoms often get frustrated and fed up with being sick all the time.

People affected by the condition usually see a decrease in their peers and social network. The reason being that most of the time, they feel completely drained and cannot take part in activities they love.

To crown it all, what preoccupies chronic fatigue syndrome patients is that if they cannot work anymore, they will lose their independence and livelihood simultaneously. This ends up making them feel guilty and isolated.

7. Depression

If you have a loved one suffering from depression, you have definitely witnessed how this disorder has deeply impacted her/his daily life. At work, individuals who are depressed are prone to be quite slow and unproductive. Feelings of gloom and despair fill up their heart and mind, leaving them totally shattered. They often feel unable to make decisions by themselves as they fear that they might make a lot of mistakes. Individuals who are depressed may also not feel interested to do anything and can prefer to remain alone rather than attending gatherings and parties. This is worsened by the inexplicable sudden mood swings that usually accompanies depression. Unfortunately, someone who gets easily irritated will alienate others – realizing that one is being avoided can further worsen the depression.

8. Eczema and psoriasis

Like any other skin disease, eczema and psoriasis can also adversely impact the emotional wellbeing of an individual. You see, individuals with these conditions often worry about what others will think if they see their red inflamed skin – some could feel disgusted, make hurtful remarks or wrongly think that they are contagious. As such, they often like they have no choice but to wear lots of makeup, long sleeves or long infinity scarves to cover their chest and neck. Moreover, because many people do not understand how living with eczema can take a toll on one’s energy levels, many tend to judge the person suffering from eczema when s/he calls into work sick. Since eczema flares can be very severe, individuals suffering from the condition do not want to leave their house and are scared of having a personal life since they don’t want others to see their skin. For some, eczema even feels like a life-sentence.

9. Loss of sex drive.

When candida yeast overgrowth barges into someone’s life, it sometimes causes a severe hormonal disturbance. When this happens, that person’s body becomes inflamed, resulting in vaginal foul smells and itching. Women experiencing this are mortified at the idea that their sexual partners might notice the change in their body and therefore, start to distance themselves from loved ones. This leads them to stay away from certain sexual practices, including oral sex. Some of them avoid sex altogether because they are too self-conscious and because they do not want to be thought of as ‘unhygienic’, ‘sexually immoral’ or ‘ethically unsound’. Such a change in a woman’s behavior generally ends up with the couple breaking up.

10. Difficulty concentrating and brain fog

We’ve all experienced times in our lives when we just couldn’t focus for long but this usually improves after a good night’s rest. However, individuals with Candida yeast overgrowth may feel like they wake up each morning in a completely zombie-like mode and go through the day without being able to concentrate on the simplest of task. They may find it hard to think right and this can lead them to feel totally disconnected from their surroundings. As you may guess, these kinds of feelings can lead to a loss of drive, motivation and confidence especially for those who always had a sharp memory. Many individuals who suffer from prolonged periods of brain fog or difficulty concentrating may even withdraw themselves from their loved ones especially if they have trouble recounting the recent activities in which they took part in.

Recognizing the symptoms of Candida yeast overgrowth, and how they can deeply impact your emotional wellbeing and overall quality of life, can make it easier for you to deal with the symptoms. How To Minimize General Health Complications

There are many different types of aggravations people experience who come to seek the help of a health care professional. Some people come in with one or several pharmaceutical drug induced side effects, such as after an antibiotic, others experience a reaction when they stop taking a drug or change brands of drugs, etc.

Many people can potentially develop an aggravation at the beginning of natural therapy treatment, and this can be quite discouraging for some. Those who are used to conventional Western medicine find the concept of “feeling worse before you feel better” a bit disturbing and some find it even downright crazy, particularly those who strongly adhere to tenets of modern medicine. Modern medicine believes that a diagnosis must first be made before treatment usually in the form of a drug that supposedly cures the complaint by way of eradicating the symptom.

Aggravations can come about for many different reasons and here are six examples of common reactions that I see occurring regularly with patients:

1. Drug adverse reactions which we call iatrogenic disease

2. Coming off any medications or detoxing from pharmaceutical drugs.

3. A change in diet after commencing treatment.

4. Combining several different treatments, drugs and dietary supplements, at the same time.

5. Improperly combining drugs and natural medicines at the same time.

Cleansing reactions of the body after commencing natural medicine treatment, often times this will be drug residues clearing from the body.

You may notice that I have not mentioned a “die-off” reaction above (Herxheimer reaction), i.e., candida yeast dying off in the body due to effective candida treatment. In my experience, many people incorrectly perceive aggravations after the commencement of yeast infection treatment as “die-off.”

I have found that these aggravations are often due to a combination of several factors and cannot be blamed solely on “yeast dying-off.” Numerous health conditions frequently get rather more severe with effective treatment solution for a variety of different reasons.

Unfortunately, we live in an age that seems to be obsessed with speed, everything has to happen NOW. It seems as if we can’t seem to wait until tomorrow for anything anymore. As technology increases and everything speeds up, so do our expectations of healing our bodies. As a result we expect a quick fix, and conventional medicine certainly comes up trumps here, it gets rid of symptoms, more likely suppresses them, so the disease goes somewhere else and gets buried deeper inside our bodies. Do you have a rash on your skin? Then take an antifungal cream, it will go deeper when you apply that cream and will not be cured by any means, but will temporarily disappear, which is a “cure” according to your skin specialist.

Is it any wonder we get aggravations once we actually stop these kinds of suppressive treatments and all these hidden and buried symptoms rise to the surface of our bodies? Conventional Medicine Tends To Ignore Yeast Infections Altogether

Most conventional doctors I have known think that yeast can overgrow only in an immune system that is severely suppressed. For example, if a patient has AIDS or cancer than they may prescribe powerful anti fungal drugs (depending generally on the results of a test), and with negative test results will most probably send you home with a diagnosis of “irritable bowel syndrome”. What doctors are looking for here is known as systemic candidiasis and this is a most serious condition that occurs in persons with suppressed immune systems (for example those who have undergone chemotherapy or AIDS patients who have experienced a total collapse of their immune system). This form of candidiasis can affect the lungs, liver, kidneys and brain. The candida I am referring to in this series is a much more common phenomenon, and is a functional overgrowth which involves the excessive proliferation of candida yeast species in the gastrointestinal system. This overgrowth can take on a more insidious form, as mentioned in an earlier article. Candida yeast skin infections can affect you systemically, however.

I can tell you with 100% absolute certainty that candida does occur in people who do not have AIDS or cancer, or those with normal well functioning immune systems. Candida overgrowth, like many chronic complaints which remain unresolved with conventional methods, is best treated with several stages in mind. I will elaborate on these methods in this article but will for the sake of brevity will focus on the treatment, including some aspects of the candida diet.

The two common complaints I see in many patients are Athlete’s Foot as well as Jock Itch. Both of these annoying complaints can be remedied and completely eradicated by following my principles. Medical treatment: Topical and Oral Anti-Fungal Medications

In extreme cases, you doctor may prescribe oral anti fungal medications for a bad case of thrush or internal gut related candida infection if it is extensive or severe and / or a condition resists topical anti fungal therapy. Some doctors I know routinely treat women with thrush with a powerful anti fungal drug called Fluconazole, which in some cases sorts the problem but for most women it is far from over. Many women I have seen take Fluconazole once per week – ongoing. How silly is that, to stay on a drug indefinitely without trying to remedy the underlying causes.

Their sugar, chocolate or alcohol rich diet was never addressed and their thrush returned within vengeance weeks to months later, prompting the doctor to prescribe another round or even stronger “top shelf” antibiotics. So many patients I have seen have been prescribed a pharmaceutical anti fungal for either a skin, vaginal or intestinal yeast problem, and often recurrently. Probiotics

Isn’t it interesting to note the big interest in probiotics lately, when natural health-care professionals have been recommending that people eat foods which enhance their bowel flora naturally for almost one hundred years. Natural health practitioners were recommending patients to eat cultured foods containing lactic acid such as sauerkraut and yogurt long before any probiotic supplement was ever developed, even as far back as the 1920’s and 30’s. Lactic acid today is widely used for reducing the number of pathogenic bacteria like E.coli, salmonella, campylobacter, and listeria on beef, pork, and poultry during the slaughtering process. Fermented foods like sauerkraut and yogurt are both foods which are rich in lactic acid, and you only need a small amount daily to make the difference if you have chronic candida. I’ve written extensively on fermented and cultured foods as well as probiotics in my book Candida Crusher.

It is known that lactic acid in yogurt has a most beneficial effect on improving not only the bowel flora by inhibiting pathogenic bacteria, but favorably affecting several aspects of immunity. Are you eating yogurt? Try to avoid yogurt in the little plastic tubs with artificial sugars, instead  chose naturally soured yogurt which has no fruit nor added sugar. Ask your organic shop, they will surely guide you in the right direction.

Commonly Prescribed Anti-Fungal Drugs

  • Itraconazole (Sporanox)
  • Fluconazole (Diflucan)
  • Ketoconazole (Nizoral)

Itraconazole and fluconazole are claimed to be relatively “safe drugs”. Side effects can range from nausea and vomiting, constipation or diarrhoea, headache, dizziness, abnormal liver function tests, allergic skin rashes such as dermatitis, enlarged breasts (in males) and adrenal suppression. Here is a picture of a patient who developed a skin reaction after an antibiotic. I think I’d rather stick with the candida infection thanks…Besides, some species of candida are resistant to “azoles”, and azole resistance is increasing, especially in immuno-suppressed patients who are prescribed long courses of drugs. I have written an entire chapter in Candida Crusher on medical treatments, and explain in detail about the “zole” drugs your doctor is likely to use, and what your natural alternatives are.

Nystatin


Like many other anti-fungal and antibiotics, Nystatin is of bacterial origin. It was discovered in the 1940’s by two clever female scientists who were looking for an agent in the soil which may be useful in controlling fungal diseases. It was called “Nystatin” after New York, the state it was first discovered. Nystatin is a generally well tolerated drug because very little is absorbed from your intestinal tract. I have found that it is well tolerated and have recommended it after first reading about it in Dr. William Crook’s book “The Yeast Connection” in the 1980’s.  The usual starting dose is 500,000 to 1 million units, four times daily. (Each tablet is 500,000 units or 1/8 teaspoon of the powder) I have recommended patients to talk to their doctors about Nystatin; it is the safest of all drugs your doctor could prescribe for a yeast or fungal condition in your body.William Vayda, a notable Sydney naturopath from the 1970’s and 1980’s stated in his article: “Systemic Yeast infection – part two”. Nature & Health. (1986). “Nystatin is one of only a few drugs that can destroy and eliminate Candida albicans from the gut and can kill the toxins generated by Candida albicans throughout the body.

Dr. Orion Truss, who inspired Dr. Crook to write his landmark book about candida used Nystatin extensively in the 1970’s to discourage yeast growth in his patients, and was one of the first medical doctors to notice the connection between an antibiotic and candida infections. Naturopath William Vayda advised readers to discard their usual aversion to pharmaceutical drugs in the case of Nystatin, in view of its superiority over natural treatments for the systemic elimination Candida albicans. My experience with Nystatin however is that it still is a pharmaceutical drug, it works in only some cases and has some residual side-effects in some patients. but I now prefer to recommend natural medicines. You may not prefer to use Nystatin and these days there are many more natural ways to clear candida, so let’s explore natural ways to treat this annoying complaint. I have certainly been no huge fan of Nystatin the past several years, and have seen the massive “die-off” it has caused with all too many patients in my clinic. And Fluconazole? – just avoid it, you will find that when you break the cycle of using pharmaceutical drugs and use natural medicines you will get a much better result with yeast infections in the long run. Those who recurrently use drugs will develop a dependence on them, not so with natural medicines.

Step 1 – Starve That Beast Called Yeast

Change Your Diet

Don’t feed candida on the foods they love. This means avoid like the plague any refined carbohydrate foods like white flour, and especially any refined sugars such as high fructose corn syrup, glucose, fruit juices and even honey. There are so many books and articles I have read relating to candida eradication, I have tried countless diets with patients but have achieved much success with the following diet which I have found actually works for the majority of yeast infection sufferers.Not how I said the “majority”? And that’s because not every single person with a chronic yeast infection will find this diet to be perfect for them, some will need to tweak it a little to suit their needs.

The thing is to use common sense, and not to rely exclusively on diet books! Mark Twain once said: “be careful reading books on health, you may die of a misprint”. If you crave it – then stop eating it. If is very sweet in your mouth and you know it is wrong – stop eating it. Just like the beer bellied couch potato sports enthusiast, or the sugar plum fairy who likes her late afternoon wine and nibbles, candida prefers refined snack type foods, alcohol like beer and wine as well as chocolate, ice cream, donuts, take-out and candy. Yeast hates a healthy diet full of fresh vegetables, fruits and high quality proteins devoid of refined carbohydrates. Read: Yeast Infection And Carbohydrates. I have never been convinced that patients need to strictly avoid all fruits with candida issues, but do request that those with major problems be quite strict for the first three weeks and then ease up a little. If you suspect a yeast infection, it is useful to take note of my dietary advice since it does not contradict the general guidelines for good healthy eating and has made an enormous difference in the lives of so many patients I have seen who, unbeknown to them, were being made miserable by this condition. Just do the diet strictly for three weeks, then include more fresh fruits. Stay on this diet for as long as it takes which could be 3 – 6 months. You will feel great and will have probably made some long term changes as your health has improved in many different ways. Want to learn a lot more about diet, nutrition and Candida? Step 2 – Suppress And Eradicate That Yeast Overgrowth

But Be Careful Of “Die-Off”

Some people who talk about suppressing and eradicating a Candida yeast infection like to use the word “kill” when it comes to candida treatment, but killing is not necessary. Wars never solve problems, they just create more wars. Today I rather suppress yeast and build good bowel flora and have found it much more satisfactory and an even more effective approach without needlessly aggravating the patient. Some tend to think the “die-off” is unavoidable, but it is not necessary.

Some therapies that successfully treat candida by causing the rapid death of large numbers of yeasts can cause a “die-off” reaction (known as the Herxheimer reaction) during which great amounts of toxins are released from the dead candida microorganisms. These toxins can cause allergies and rather severe reactions in many people. Some patients (prematurely) abandon their candida treatment under the mistaken belief that this “die-off” reaction and its associated allergic reactions are an indication that their candida over-proliferation is worsening rather than diminishing. Here is a list of some of the most effective things to take, in no particular order. I have not mentioned dosages because I tend to customize dosage levels for each individual patient, and what works for one may aggravate another quite badly.  If in doubt, use the “go low and go slow” method when it comes to supplementation. Get help, if these things do not make a significant difference then seek out a good naturopath or nutritionally orientated doctor who is genuinely knowledgeable about the treatment of candida. While you can self-prescribe, I think it is best if you work in with a Candida experienced health-care professional rather than follow the advice from some magazine or a friend. Candida treatment has its ups and downs, and a program tailored to suit your specific needs will be much more effective than just adopting a yeast free diet and taking a bunch of supplements and hoping for the best. I’ve devoted a significant section (70 pages) of my book Candida Crusher to explaining in great detail the best dietary supplements and special foods which will help you eradicate a yeast infection.

  • Caprylic acid: Caprylic acid is a very effective, broad-spectrum anti-fungal monounsaturated fatty acid in a capsule. It works well and I have used it for years. It is more potent against detrimental fungi than many commonly used anti-fungal supplements. I give it three times daily for about 6 weeks then reduce to twice daily. It works better if you have a teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil daily as well. Be sure to include some coconut oil and coconut milk regularly in your diet – they contain capric and caprylic acid as well, though not as concentrated (nor sustained release) like a supplement would contain.
  • Digestive enzymes: These are essential to break down the foods you eat into usable nutrients, especially where there is a candida overgrowth which depletes hydrochloric acid and digestive enzymes in your stomach. Supplemental pancreatic enzymes and supplemental proteolytic enzymes (such as pancreatic amylase, Bromelain, chymotrypsin, lipases, papain and trypsin) will all help to significantly reduce the discomfort caused by any Herxheimer (“die-off”) reactions.
  • Good probiotic supplement.  I generally recommend that you take a combined enzyme/probiotic supplement, they don’t affect each other and it saves you having to take a handful of pills. A most effective candida probiotic should contain Saccharomyces and Lactobacillus rhamnosus species. I recommend taking probiotics twice daily before foods.
  • Colloidal silver. This product works in suppressing and even wiping out candida. Here is a small section out of a study completed by the School of Medicine, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, “Preliminary studies on your colloidal silver preparation (1500 ppm) show it to be effective in inhibiting and killing strains of Candida albicans. Three strains of Candida were tested and they were all killed by the preparation at between 46 and 93 ppm. Growth was inhibited at between 0.7 and 1.4 ppm”.
  • Pau d’arco Tea. This tea from the South American tree has a long folk use in the treatment of infections. Several compounds from Pau d’arco have demonstrated anti-Candida effects. Drink a cup of Pau d’arco tea twice daily, and take in supplemental form as part of an anti-fungal supplement.
  • Garlic. This is one of my favorite and most effective anti-candida measures. Garlic suppresses and kills most forms of detrimental fungi, bacteria, protozoan and viruses. I have for many years had a large bowl of garlic cloves on my kitchen bench and use fresh cloves in most of my cooking along with plenty of fresh herbs such as oregano, sage, basil, thyme, and parsley. These herbs were introduced into cooking many thousands of years ago to inhibit bacteria and eliminate parasites, not to flavor foods! Do you eat garlic daily? It will help your digestive, circulatory and immune system in many ways. While you can supplement with capsules of aged or odorless garlic, fresh is again the best. Can’t tolerate garlic? Then get the odourless capsules or tablets.
  • Oregano oil. Another good yeast eradicator is oregano, it is the best leafy herb to counter candida, so be sure to eat fresh oregano; use it in salads, egg dishes, etc. Make sure your anti-fungal supplement contains oregano oil.
  • Grapefruit seed extract (GSE). This is possibly the most potent of all yeast eradicators, and studies have shown that it can help to rid your body of many different kinds of bad bacteria, yeasts, and parasites. Make sure your anti-fungal product contains it.
  • A top quality vitamin and mineral as well as Omega 3 supplement. These are important since candida taxes the body’s own reserves of vitamins and minerals. Take a quality multi-vitamin every day, along with a quality Omega3 supplement.

Step 3 – Drop The Drugs And Yeast-Promoting Foods

Antibiotics Are THE Biggest Cause

Avoid broad spectrum antibiotics and immuno-suppressant drugs like cortisone, prednisone and inhaled steroids, birth control or hormone replacement therapy pills whenever possible. Today’s powerful antibiotics are able to suppress good micro flora and cause candida overgrowth in just a few days.  Read: Yeast Infections And Antibiotics

But wait, there’s more, in New Zealand for example we are feeding around 70 million chickens per year low doses of antibiotic every single day of their lives. You may be surprised to hear that there are several strains of antibiotic resistant bacteria found in conventionally (caged) raised poultry, buy free range chicken for this reason. What country do you live in, and how are the chickens raised and processed where you live? Do you eat supermarket chicken? Chances are that you will also be consuming antibiotics in a very low dose, and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that very long-term low dose antibiotics is the same as short term high dose. The solution? Look for clean, preferably free-range chicken and eggs and avoid the well known commercial brands which almost always contain traces of antibiotics. Some of these companies are clever, and while they promote themselves as “our chicken contains no growth hormones”,  but they do contain traces of antibiotic residues. How else can you keep thousands of birds healthy when you stuff them in cages, keep them in the dark and give them a totally unnatural lifestyle?

It is preferable to eat organic meats whenever possible, and this includes beef, lamb and pork. Free-range or organic deer meat (venison) or buffalo (if you live in USA) and ocean fish are probably your best protein choices because they haven’t been “fiddled with”. Your grandparents probably had a few chickens and grew some vegetables. The book Candida Crusher contains plenty of information about antibiotics, and outlines the medical treatment of candida. Your doctor will most likely only see a vaginal yeast infection as being the main yeast infection in their patients, whereas I see them manifest to a large degree in the digestive system, and antibiotics are one of the biggest culprits. I’ll show you how to not only recover fully from a yeast infection in Candida Crusher, and how you can avoid this condition for life.

You don’t need to take antibiotics routinely for trivial infections as a “precautionary measure” as some doctors put it. We have become a germ-obsessed society, and you will have no doubt seen those advertisements for cleaning products on your television which focus on the importance of keeping your home surroundings literally sterile. The cleaner we want to be and the more drugs like antibiotics and germ-killing chemical cleansing agents we use to achieve this objective, the more we increase our risk stronger and increasingly drug-resistant strains of bacteria, fungi and viruses.

Step 4 –  Rest Your Immune System

Stop Allergenic Foods For Now

Food allergies are most common with candida. The things you crave are frequently what the yeast itself craves. Try to identify any possible sensitivities or allergies and weed them out. This can be of enormous benefit to you, as you will be side-stepping those foods and drinks that are challenging your immune system the most. Steer clear of milk products, baked foods made with wheat flour, and all foods to which you suspect you might be allergic or sensitive to. Reducing the workload on your immune system enables it to have sufficient energy and powers it up to allow your body to finally eradicate that candida yeast infection. I have found this to be a key but often overlooked factor to a complete recovery. The immune system is the one that finishes off the job, but only if it has the energy to do so. Eating foods that have a high allergy potential or typical yeast promoting foods like conventionally baked and risen breads and alcohol tires out your immune system since it is forced to shadow box any antibodies it has built up that mimic candida.

Avoiding the foods most commonly associated with allergies and sensitivities allows your immune system to rest up well, giving you the best chance of fighting a yeast infection.The foods I would like to see you avoid for several months (and if you do you may want to avoid them for a long time because you will feel great) include: all “risen” breads (using conventional baker’s yeast), all soft cheeses (in those foil wrappers), wine, beer and spirits and plain white vinegar, chocolate, peanuts, grapes and sweets. In this category I would also place bananas and oranges and mandarins (lemon and lime is OK) as well as ALL dried fruits. Ask yourself how sweet your treats are, if you simply must have something sweet then have a fresh pear for example.

Step 5 – Identify And Avoid Chemicals And Toxins

Detoxification – Clean Up Your Body

To further reduce load on your immune system, avoid as much as possible car fumes; chemical pollutants; insecticides, sprays, artificial colors; preservatives; emulsifiers and as mentioned food allergens as well as any inhaled allergens. Do you have amalgam (mercury) fillings and can’t seem to shake recurrent yeast infections? Take a look at what mercury does to your gut; every time you swallow you ingest a tiny amount of methylated mercury in your bowel on which candida can potentially thrive. Why not do a cleansing program yourself? It is a quick way to clean up the body. Step 6 – Lifestyle Changes
