In fact, that’s an Australian expression, good day. I say greetings. Eric Bakker, the naturopath from New Zealand. Here’s a question, can leaky gut cause weight gain? Absolutely. Leaky gut can cause a lot of problems. One of the big things it certainly causes for people I’ve seen is fatigue, but also brain fog. Many people who digest food reasonably well but don’t really get the full benefit of the nutrition they’re eating end other sleeping problems, energy problems, and also sometimes emotional issues, okay? Some depressions or anxieties can happen and these things lead, again, to inappropriate eating and weight gain. So if you’ve got leaky gut or if you’ve got a gut issue and you are carrying weight, understand that it’s important to get the digestive processes working really, really well if you want to have outstanding health because great health only comes from great gut health.
That’s the only way you’re going to get outstanding health. You can’t buy it. You can’t get it off the internet, okay? You can’t get Elon Musk to take it down from Mars for you. Donald Trump’s not going to give you good health. You’ve got to earn that health yourself and the only way you’re going to do that is by correcting ways of living according to natural laws, all right? And that’s what this site’s all about. So if you have got issues there with weight, it would really pay to work on the digestive system. There are plenty of videos on this channel to help you as far as that’s concerned.
Why do some people struggle for years and years to try and get on top of a candida problem or a SIBO problem or a irritable bowel problem or a gut problem in general? Some people for years they go on and on. Some patients I’ve seen on candida diets for three years, even five or 10 years. Whereas other people within three months, six months or a year, boom, they got rid of it. It’s gone. Okay. Even some people who’ve had it for years can nail it in no time. Yet others just go on and on and on.
I’ll give you a couple of reasons why. One of the reason is obviously genetic. There are things that we can account for. Some people are fast healers. Other people aren’t. Some people heal really quick. Other people heal really slowly. But in my opinion it’s got a lot to do with the diet and lifestyle and the supplementation. Those three key things of those two cohorts, of those two groups. Okay. So one group will chop and change. They’ll go on a diet and they’ll get aggravation and quickly switch to another diet. They’ll go to the internet and they’ll find something else. So every so many weeks or months, they’re switching from one thing to another. That’s not an… Oh my goodness, my bookshelves are finally falling down. Actually, that was a book falling. So that’s one group. Okay.
Another group, the doctor hoppers, they’ll hop from one doctor to another. So I’ve had many patients over the years I’ve seen. They’ll stay with me for maybe a month, six weeks. Then they’ll jump over to another person over there, lady maybe in Alabama, or they’ll go to a guy in New York or they’ll get to some guru in Madrid, Spain or something. And then a year later they’re back on my doorstep again. That’s common too. People not sticking to a clearly defined protocol and working it through, but changing horses midstream. Not a good idea. Okay.
And then we get the supplement hoppers, the people who try this pill and that pill. They’ll go either. They’ll buy a supplement for $6.99. They’ll take 25 capsules a day and they didn’t work. And then they’ll try another supplement and another supplement. Some people I see end up with a whole desk full of 50, 60 supplements, cupboards falls, their drawer full of stuff. And you know what? It was a waste of money. Instead of just sticking to a clearly defined protocol with a high quality range and following it through, they’d probably would have achieved an outstanding result in a much shorter period of time.
I was in exactly that same position in my twenties. I kept changing for awhile. I had nowhere to go. I didn’t know who to talk to. There was no internet. All I had was a library with old fashioned books. We didn’t really know what to do. So I had to figure things out for myself. And eventually that led to study. And the rest of you will know. So it’s not a good idea to keep changing what you do.
But to do one thing and to see it all the way through until its completion especially if you work with someone who’s got experience, and I’m not talking about me because there’s people out there probably way more experienced than me. But I have worked with a lot of people for a long period of time in clearly defined niches and work that protocols over 10, 15, 20 years that pretty well nail candida. But it’s up to you. Whether there’s a trust issue with me or you want to jump on the internet, try something else, I’m fine by that. But I can tell you this. Find something that works for you and don’t change. Stick with it, right?
The key thing is you need to look for reasons why you keep going back into the candida state. You have to take a long, hard look at yourself, particularly how you live, how you eat, how you think, how you work, how you relate. All of these things need investigating. So the best knowledge is self knowledge. When you can work these things out, make some changes. You’ll probably find your health will go up another notch. You just have to keep looking. There’s no guru out there. There’s no book that’s the bible of candida. They don’t exist, right? But there’s a whole bunch of people out there on the internet that are talking a lot of crap. I can tell you that from spending a lot of time looking at different websites.
When I launched Candida Crusher in 2013, a lot of the information in that book was quite new to the market. It’s interesting now that many people are saying the same stuff, right? But many of the products that they’re promoting are just not up to speed. You can take whatever you want. I don’t really care what supplements you take. I just make sure the quality is good and that the products actually work, and you will know that by taking something for a period of just several weeks, you should start noticing significant changes slowly building up in the body. Especially when the diet has been changed and the lifestyle is conducive towards healing you, you’ll notice serious results as time goes by sooner rather than later.
But remember every person on that step through recovery will always have some type of headwind or setback. Don’t let that stop you, right? You’ve had many setbacks in your life probably like I’ve had. You’ve had doors closed in your face or people saying no. It doesn’t matter. If you keep on going, another door opens, right?
So to recap, stick with the plan that’s proven with many people and it’s defined. That plan needs to be tailored by you to suit yourself. B, make sure that your lifestyle is conducive towards healing, meaning spending too much time on the internet is not going to work for you. You know what I mean? Working too hard, not working enough, having bad relationships with people. These things need fixing. These things are probably more important than what goes in here because what you digest here is just as important, if not more than what you digest down there. All right? And the third thing is don’t take a whole bunch of supplements. You don’t need 20 supplements. You just need a few clearly defined ones that are going to work and you stay there. Keep those on track for several months until you get that desired action you’re looking for. And like many people, there should be a big breakthrough for you coming up. It’s just a matter of staying on track.
It’s week four of the lockdown, isn’t it crazy? I trust everyone out there is having a good time and taking it easy and not stressing too much. I suppose it depends on the country that you’re in. I’ve got lots of stuff to go through today, all sorts of questions from people.
Let’s start off with an interesting one here, a question I get asked quite a bit. It’s about these operations for the stomach, for the gastroesophageal reflux operations or GERD. Heartburn, acid reflux, this kind of stuff. Many people complain about this. Millions and millions of people in the United States have this symptom every single day of the year and it’s bloody terrible. I used to have this when I was in my twenties because I did dumb things. Dumb things lead to, often dumb consequences like pain or things like that. I’m not saying that all cases of GERD are caused by doing silly things, but I could easily say the vast majority are. Like what I did, I was stupid, I was young. I used to drive a truck in my twenties, come home, this is before I studied, I’d have a can of Coke and I’d have a pie or something from the bakery for breakfast. Then an hour later I’d get this terrible heartburn, until I realized it was my own stupidity.
Now here’s the question, should I get Nissen fundoplication surgery for GERD. Nissen fundoplication is a weird term, but it’s a term that’s used for a particular type of operation that’s completed on the stomach, on the top of the stomach. Basically they wrap a small part of the stomach around the bottom of the esophagus where it meets onto the stomach. This tightens that top of the stomach up more. Because you’ve got this sphincter or this muscle, a sphincter is a round muscle. You’ve got one there on top of the tummy right at the bottom of the esophagus called the lower esophageal sphincter, funny that, it’s called LES. When LES isn’t happy, LES isn’t going to really stay closed for a while and LES is going to open his mouth right up, and then LES is going to allow stuff from the stomach to come into the esophagus and that’s going to give heartburn. Sometimes you can feel it here in the chest. Sometimes guys get this and think they’re having a heart attack when in fact what they probably had are three Big Macs or some greasy crap to eat half an hour before.
When you get heartburn, the key thing I would ask you if you were a patient, how long have you had it for? When do you get it? How often do you get it? When did it start? What kind of job you got? What are you eating? Because usually there’s one big problem with GERD and it’s this thing, it’s called the mouth. There’s something wrong with the mouth. It can’t seem to stay closed long because too much stuff goes in here. Too much food goes in here. When there’s a problem with the mouth, eventually you’ll get a problem with the stomach. But the problem goes beyond the mouth, it’s probably up here somewhere, probably emotional stuff. I don’t know why people eat half the crap that they do, but often eating the wrong kind of food, eating too much food is the problem with GERD. So that’s the problem, you’ve got to watch out what goes in the mouth, how it’s chewed, how much you eat.
For example, with this COVID-19 lockdown, I’ve cut down to two meals per day, and I’ve done that now for the last four weeks. You don’t need three, four meals in a day, especially if you’re sitting on your butt in your own property and you’re not moving around much. So too much food is the first thing I think about with GERD, too much food. The wrong kind of food. Inappropriate food, fatty meats, lots of alcohol, large portion sizes, far too much bread. Lots of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. One patient I had, I’ll never forget this patient from the United States I had, but it could have been Germany anywhere, and this person’s main diet was peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Well, that’s not really a good idea, is it? So these are the things often that lead to GERD, and of course obesity can push you in there even further.
So should you get this operation? If you’ve got to heartburn, it really depends on how bad the situation is. You could have also some erosion in the lower part of the esophagus from too much acid, and that can even push you sometimes into a cancer state. If you have got GERD, there are natural solutions for it. There are ways you can mitigate these symptoms and calm them down. But this is the kicker, if you’ve got a lot of weight on your frame, you need to get it off, because otherwise it’s not really going to help you much. These are the things that need discussing and working out.
All the years I saw patients, there were only two people I really requested that they get surgery, esophageal surgery, basically like this. In both cases it worked brilliantly, but these were very, very large people who couldn’t even walk from literally here to the door without their knees being in severe pain. So it was life or death, but in most cases it’s not like that. So should you get it? I don’t think you should. I think you should look at alternatives, I think you should try and lose weight first, make some changes. I’ve seen many people successfully get rid of their heartburn and lose weight and change their diet and not have this dreadful symptom anymore. It’s totally achievable, but remember, the ball’s in your court, it’s up to you. You don’t need the surgery if you don’t want it, but you’re going to have to work through some stuff.
The other part I’ll leave you with, which I’m not happy about, once a person has had surgery of course, their whole life changes. They can never really eat reasonable portion sizes again. They’re usually down to small portion sizes. Surgeons often don’t tell people how dreadful those first three to six months or a year can be after this operation. It’s not really nice. Socially, it won’t be nice for you going out. It won’t be nice for eating at home and people come over. You’ll suffer emotionally for a while until you get used to that. All the more reasons not to really get this operation done if you can avoid it. But for other people who comment on this video will say, “Look, it was a miracle for me”, and it probably is, but you don’t need to get there in the first place. This could all be avoided by lifestyle and diet, simple. Take care.
Can probiotics cause stomach pain. This is a question we get regularly asked. People take a probiotic, particularly if they’d take an enzyme probiotic formula, I’ll get sometimes a comment, “Oh, I got this pain in my tummy. I took this capsule and an hour later I feel like vomiting or I felt sick or …” Look, anything’s possible with supplements. Some people react to drinking purified water, they get sick from drinking that. So people can react to all kinds of stuff.
When you have a reaction, especially with a probiotic, I start to think what type of bacteria you’ve got in your gut and what’s really going on there. So try it from this angle. If you get any kind of sensation like that with a probiotic, always make sure you take it with food. Don’t take it away from food. Some people can get away with probiotics away from food, but the general consensus is, from where I’m sitting, from the experts I’ve spoken to, that probiotic should be taken with food. So when we say with food, it can be the beginning of the meal in the middle of the meal or at the end of the meal. If you’ve got a very strong aggravation, take a probiotic right in the middle of the meal. That should lessen any chance of bad pain or things like this. More chance of getting this reaction if you take a probiotic enzyme formula rather than a probiotic formula.
So if you look at CanXida Restore, for example, that’s an enzyme and probiotic formula. Now, enzymes are not the best taken on an empty tummy as it is. Again, some people can get away with it, but in many can’t. So if you were to take CanXida Restore, for example, and you were to say, “Ah, tummy’s hurting. I can’t have the whole capsule. I’m got to open it up or …” Try this tip. So with your main meal, take that capsule right in the middle of the main meal. That should really stop aggravations or bad pain. If you still have a problem, open the supplement up, pour half of it out, sprinkle it on the food, mix it through, and then have it. See if that mitigates.
What you’ll find is initially what was a problem over a period of a few weeks or a month will become less a problem and it won’t be a problem anymore. just because you had a reaction the first or second time you took a supplement, it doesn’t mean to say you’ll always have that reaction. Just because you went to the gym the first time and you hurt your butt and you couldn’t sit down for three days, it doesn’t mean to say every time you drive past the gym, the butt’s going to hurt automatically, is it? No, it’s not because the butt will get used to the exercise and in time it won’t hurt anymore. Persistence breaks resistance.
I always laugh when I see these people on the internet promoting bone broth, healing bone broth, you’ve got to drink this bone broth. Man, I grew up with this stuff, like a lot of people my age, and my grandma used to make broths, and my great grandma, and my ma, and I make them. And this is just part of normal cooking, is to get a big chunk of bone, chuck it in a pot, put water in it, and then put it on the gas. I mean, that’s bone broth. It’s basic, isn’t it? But there’s different ways and means of making bone broths. There are different types of bone broths. Okay?
I don’t call them bone broths. I call them stock, because that’s what they are. They’re stock, they’re basically just a stock. There’s fish stock, beef stock, there’s chicken stock. There’s all sorts of stocks. Chicken is probably my favorite. I do like the the other animal bone stocks as well. The beef one’s quite nice.
You need to really find an organic supplier for these body parts of animals like bones and stuff. No point really going to commercial stuff. So you’ll find an organic butcher. There are plenty of them around. Nice piece of leg bone, the beef bones’ quite good to use, but you can use many different types of bones. The thing is, I use a large stainless steel pot, and I use alkaline water, usually around about 9 or 10 pH. But you could use anything you want. Filtered water is good. Don’t use tap water with fluoride and chlorine in it. I mean, it’s not a great idea, is it? Use a nice purified water. You cover that bone.
And then what I normally do is, I’ll put some vinegar in with it. I’ll put one or two tablespoons of vinegar into the water, a bit of acid to help extract the calcium and magnesium out of the bone more easily, so you’ll have a bone broth full of minerals. And then on top of that, I’ll usually put in a couple of stalks of celery, a couple of carrots, a couple of potatoes, a piece of cauliflower, just different vegetables I’ll throw in that pot. I’ll bring it to the boil. I’ll put a nice generous amount of salt, of sea salt in there, probably a tablespoon of sea salt will go in there, a bit of pepper or something, and that’ll get boiled and then turned down to simmer.
Now that will be simmer all day. So I’ll have that on the gas stove, I’ll turn it down to the lowest setting and just leave it for about four or five hours, keeping an eye it doesn’t dry out. And occasionally I’ll just skim the stuff off the top. You’ll get some stuff rising up there, clean that off.
If you want to make an outstanding broth, after several hours, take all the vegetables out and drain them. Throw the liquid back. Put a second lot the vegetables in there. These are supremely good bone broth.
So with a chicken, I put the whole chicken in the pot, free range [inaudible 00:00:02:44]. Now, I like to have usually the liver, the organs, all the bits of the chicken as well. So I keep all the flesh, everything, skin, the whole lot in there. And then I’ll cook that, same, with vegetables. And then when I’ve let that cook for a while, I’ll skim the fat off the top. I’ve found a cheap way to do that. A tricky way is to get a paper towel, and when the broth’s cold, to drop it on top and lift it, and you get a lot of fat and junk sticking on that paper towel, which you can bin.
And then you can drain that. Keep in the refrigerator for several days. And I’ll often freeze it in small blocks. Now, that is the basis of most good dishes like casseroles or stir fries, or lots of dishes, you can use that broth or that stock as a basis. The chicken one is especially nice, you can use it for many different meals. So you’re going to get a lot of minerals in that dish. Once per week is good, to make up a broth once per week, and you’ll find that you can use the broth for, as I said, several days, and it’s very, very tasty, and it’s super healthy. And people have been doing this for thousands of years, but now it’s become like flavor of the month for some reason. Enjoy it. Especially good in winter time.
