Depression, Anxiety, And The Gut: What’s The Connection?

When someone asks me why they should care about their gut health, I think it means they’re disappointed, upset, and angry. Maybe they’re depressed. Something has happened that needs sorting out.

The gut is the seat of health, and often we placate the gut by feeding it junk food. We’ll do that because it makes us feel temporarily a little bit better. Many people do that. They eat the wrong kind of food. We see it every day when we go to places. People eat big ice creams. They have big soda drinks. They have huge, big pizzas all the time. This caters to their emotional needs. But what they don’t know is that it’s screwing up their digestive function.

If people really started to think about gut health, they would make completely different choices. For one, they’d probably eat about a third of what they currently consume. As a consequence of eating healthy, they’re going to find themselves in a much better place emotionally as well. In my opinion, the small intestine (aka the second brain) dictates moods and feelings for people a lot more than the primary brain.

You’ll notice that when people have very poor diets, they’re doing poorly in life. People with exceptionally good diets think better, feel better, and look better. Their whole life is better.
