What Is The Best Diet To Follow When Taking Antibiotics?

by Eric Bakker N.D.

Despite the fact that antibiotics are considered an amazing medical breakthrough, there is no denying that they have a number of drawbacks as well. Even though antibiotics are able to destroy the bacteria that can cause us to become sick (which helps sick people get better and heal faster) it does not work with the same type of precision or accuracy that we might assume.

Before I continue with this article, you should know I've recently compiled a list of science-backed ways to get rid of candida yeast infections. You can download my free Candida Report here if you haven't yet.

The use of antibiotics may cause additional side effects and destroy beneficial bacteria along with the damaging ones. However, we can help alleviate those secondary side effects by eating specific types of food to replenish these good bacteria. These are some guidelines that you should follow to ensure that you minimize the damage done by antibiotics.

Make sure to take plenty of probiotics

Diarrhea is just one of the side effects of taking a plethora of antibiotics. If you want to reduce problems with diarrhea when taking antibiotics, it is highly recommended that you ingest foods rich with probiotics. In an article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2012, studies revealed that these probiotics are able to help restore the balance of bacteria in our gut.

Not only is this intake of probiotics good to avoid digestive problems, but the beneficial bacteria may even serve to make the administered antibiotics even more effective according to a study in the Canadian Journal of Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology from 2006. A number of different food sources for probiotics include kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir, or yogurt, alternatively, you could be suggested a probiotic supplement as an alternative by your doctor.

Improve your intake of vitamin K

According to studies that focus on prolonged use of antibiotics, those who take antibiotics for extended amounts of time would benefit from improving their intake of vitamin K. While this is a naturally occurring bacterium in our digestive tract, antibiotics have a tendency to destroy these along with the other bad bacteria.

If you do not have enough vitamin K in your body, you will likely become deficient. This is going to lead to another array of health problems. Some of the better sources of vitamin K include beef liver, green tea, asparagus, and leafy green vegetables.

Make sure to switch up your diet

It is possible that your body has an overgrowth of yeast because of antibiotics. This can lead to an upset stomach in all sexes, and with women, it might lead to vaginal yeast infections. It is possible to eat onions and garlic to avoid this problem. When someone takes antibiotics, it drops their vitamin B levels. This means that it is important to add this vitamin to your diet, with foods such as broccoli, green vegetables, and whole grains.

Make sure to avoid specific foods

Even though you can negate the drawbacks of taking antibiotics by including certain foods in your diet, not eating specific foods can also ensure that antibiotics work better. It is a good idea to avoid acidic foods altogether. This includes soda, tomato sauce, citrus fruits, and orange juice. These can interfere with the proper absorption of the antibiotics. It is also a good idea to avoid sugary foods and foods that have both iron and calcium at the same time, because this can prevent the proper absorption of antibiotics.
